2. Stephen Thompson vs Tyron Woodley
When Tyron Woodley first won the UFC welterweight championship from Robbie Lawler at UFC 201, he initially said his next fight would either be against Nick Diaz or Georges St. Pierre. Dana White and the UFC were having little of that however.
Woodley sat out an entire year and a half waiting for his title opportunity, and it should be noted that Woodley’s claim to being the #1 contender was weak at best. Woodley has somewhat recent losses to Rory MacDonald, Jake Shields and Nate Marquardt in the last few years, and his UFC record is 6W-2L. Woodley already cherry-picked his fight against Lawler, so really the UFC had to put their foot down and tell him he wasn’t picking his first challenger as well.
The silver-lining for Woodley is that they put this fight on the MSG show, and there is probably a nice pretty payday behind it for him. Problem is that his knockout power won’t be able to do much against Wonderboy; Thompson is too good and won’t let Woodley near him.
Wonderboy is just on another level from anyone else in the division right now, and it’ll probably stay that way until GSP returns.
