UFC 9
UFC 9 almost didn’t happen, and maybe it shouldn’t have. This was the infamous UFC event that John McCain almost had cancelled. McCain, the future presidential candidate, had been campaigning against the UFC for some time and after this fight succeeded in getting them off of PPV for a period.
Only a court order hours before the event allowed UFC 9 to continue, but fighters were instructed, though most ignored, in the back that they were not to use closed fist punches. Two fighters who did heed the warning however, were main eventers Dan Severn and Ken Shamrock. What followed was what is widely regarded as the worst MMA fight of all time.
