Bob Sapp has made an entire career out of being a freakish scary looking man…
Sapp’s professional athletic career began in the late 90’s when he was drafted by the Chicago Bears, and would later sign with the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL. His pro football career was significantly less remarkable than his pro fighting career however. Sapp only played 1 pro game for the Vikings, but despite this he still found a way to get popped for steroids.
After leaving the NFL, Sapp began his pro wrestling career in 2001 and would compete with New Japan Pro Wrestling. It was in Japan that Sapp was scouted to compete in PRIDE, where his freakish stature made him a popular star for the promotion.
At first Sapp looked like he was going to be a dominant force in mixed martial arts, but not long after his career began did fighters realize there were quite a few holes (and syringe marks) in Sapp’s game.
Between 2002 and 2007 Sapp did fine in mixed martial arts, sporting a 9W-2L-1D record. Once 2008 came around everything just started to fall apart for him however. Since 2008 Bob Sapp has a 2W-17L record, a statistic that makes even Ken Shamrock cringe. His lifetime record in kickboxing, 12W-17L, is a little bit more respectable. The thing with Sapp is that it doesn’t matter how many times he loses, fans will still pay to see him. Bob Sapp is such a draw in Japan that he has appeared in commercials, TV shows and even released an album.
