So Conor McGregor proved to be in way above his depth at UFC 196. The featherweight champion jumped up two divisions to face Nate Diaz at welterweight, and it was an unsuccessful venture.
Having fought with seven straight victories and six knockouts in his division as champion, the featherweight star was finished by Diaz in the second round. Suddenly all the hype and trash talk meant nothing, as Diaz secured a tight rear naked choke and forced ‘The Notorious’ to tap out.
In fairness to Diaz, he took the fight on just 11 days notice, and did not look to be in the best of shape. What makes his win over McGregor even more impressive is the amount of sheer punishment he had to take in the first round.
Ending up bloodied after a stand up striking war with McGregor, Diaz showed his experience in deep waters and superior grappling to get a well deserved victory over the Irish star.
So the king of making predictions and fulfilling them had finally fallen, but what did he think was going to happen at UFC 196? Well, funnily enough, McGregor’s actual prediction for the fight with Diaz couldn’t have been any crazier.
