Mike Perry and Vincente Luque Went to War Last Night in Uruguay… What a Fight…
UFC Uruguay went down in Montevideo last night and overall it was a pretty rubbish event. Valentina Shevchenko totally dominated Liz Carmouche in the main event, and below that the quality was very very thin. This is definitely going to have to be something that the UFC resolves in the near future because fans will definitely start to lose patience.
However, Mike Perry fought Vincente Luque in the co-main event and brought the card up a level. Perry is always watchable. He might not be the most technically skilled fighter on the roster but he always wears his heart on his sleeve and has never been involved in a boring fight. This was no exception.
Although Luque would win the contentious split-decision, Perry was the man walking away with the respect of the crowd. Check out that insane broken nose below. Ouch, that has got to hurt. For full highlights from the fight, see below.
What a WAR! ?

This fight was an absolute slugfest, with both men delivering tonnes of action. Perry landed a hard shot on his Brazilian opponent from the beginning as well as some heavy leg kicks. Luque is a more calculated fighter though and was able to counter, opening up a vicious cut around Perry’s eye. He then barged forward with a flying knee.
Perry being Perry reacted by just throwing more heavy punches – which just hit Luque’s arms. His left eye was opened up then too. However, there was definitely some damage to Luque as well, who had blood around his nose.

In round two the pace intensified again. Luque went looking for kicks and knees to open up the round, but Perry like the mad man we love, just kept smashing him with overhands and banging some knees. There really wasn’t much between the two men. Luque definitely was more technical, but Perry was very effectively just going smash.
As you’d expect, both of these two welterweights slowed down in the third, but still bounced fists off of each other’s skulls. Perry tried to take Luque down, but it was defended successfully. He did get a period of clinch control though, where he let fly with some knees.

The crowd wasn’t impressed by this relative lull in the action. Perry gave the finger to the fans and the referee separated to the two men. Back in the centre, Luque decided to steal the fight by landing a flying knee that smashed up Perry’s nose. He then went searching for the guillotine, but the bloody Perry was able to defend.
This one went to a decision and Luque managed to win the split. To be fair it was probably the right result, but Perry has to earn kudos for being such a warrior. Now Luque is the one who is looking up the division and hoping for a top-ten opponent next time around. He’s already called out Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. You can bet that not many people will be wanting to fight the Brazilian.
