Nate Diaz Steals the Show in Austin When He Pretends to Light Up a Joint on Live TV…

Nate Diaz went full Nate Diaz at UFC Austin on Saturday night. To the delight and horror of the kids behind him, the Stockton native was filmed with a joint in hand ready to really settle down and enjoy what was an excellent night of fights.

In the main event, Donald Cerrone snapped a three-fight run of losses by knocking out rising welterweight fighter Yancy Medeiros two seconds before the end of the first round. In the co-main event, Derrick Lewis and Marcin Tybura fought out a brutal heavyweight slugfest that ended with Lewis finishing his Polish opponent.

It was an entertaining night of fights, and it needed to be because the pacing of the card by Fox Sports was absolutely awful. James Vick and Curtis Millender put in excellent performances, while the end of Steven Paterson V Brandon Davis was absolutely insane. However, without a doubt, Diaz stole the show.

No Shame

Stockton’s finest showed that he simply does not care what anyone thinks about him. That’s what makes him such a fan favorite these days. The Californian has announced he’s back in training but has yet to be given an opponent.

As you can see though, Diaz isn’t worried at all about that. In fact, he’s very relaxed. He’s so relaxed he pulled a joint out on an international broadcast. He ignites his lighter and pretends to light up before the camera quickly cut away. As casual as you like. You just have to applaud the man and his audacity.

Wise Words

Diaz’s highlight reel moment came just after Derrick Lewis defeated Marcin Tybura. Lewis sent his polish opponent into outer space with his ridiculous power. Lewis seemed to be gassing out but somehow managed to find a second wave of energy.

It was his post-fight interview that sealed his night though. The Texan is notorious for using a lot of expletives on the live mic. He has made numerous sexual references to Ronda Rousey in past interviews, stirring up controversy. This time he kept it directed towards his wife when he said:

“I’m going to try and rest up a little bit so I can be strong in the fourth round with my wife. I’m going to knock it out of the box.”

Emotional Moment

The main event had its own special moment outside of the ring. ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone knocked out Yancy Medeiros just before the bell rang for the end of the round. Medeiros regained his senses, left the cage and went over to Cerrone’s grandmother and embracing her.

Cerrone is known to have a very strong relationship with his grandmother so this is, without doubt, the greatest way that Medeiros could show respect to the man who just beat him. A truly lovely moment of courtesy in mixed martial arts.

All in all, it was a very entertaining night of fights. There was some controversy when Sage Northcutt was given the decision over Thibault Gouti, but in truth, it could have gone either way. One thing is certain though. We need Nate Diaz back in the octagon. The man is a legend.
