Tony Ferguson is an exceptionally talented fighter. The former interim lightweight champion is riding a 10 fight unbeaten streak and in another parallel universe, he might actually hold the official lightweight belt.

He infamously crippled himself at a UFC press event in the build-up to UFC 223, when he was due to fight Khabib Nurmagamedov. He has been booked to fight the Russian four times but on each occasion, one of the two men has been forced to withdraw.

Anyway, the most eccentric fighter in MMA is back and set to fight Anthony Pettis in the co-main event of UFC 229. A win will put him back in touching distance of the title. With that in mind let’s take a look at his weirdest training methods. He’s truly a unique athlete and makes Conor McGregor’s ‘touch butt’ training look normal.

Dress Pants

There are plenty of fighters with big personalities who like to make a show out of everything they do. But does anyone else train in dress pants and shoes? I don’t think so. Check out the footage above… It’s just bizarre.

And below you can he’s having fun doing some sort of leg kick training, while simultaneously dancing with the interim title on his shoulder. With all this weird stuff going on, it’s just more confusing that he hasn’t torn ligaments in training, nevermind at press events. What a crazy dude.

Mad Man

Clearly, he’s slightly unhinged – we don’t mean that in a bad way. Down below you can see two absolutely mental exercise. One is a suplex which looks super draining, while below that again is Ferguson jumping across tables. How is that a good idea?

Anthony Pettis must be worried, because how do you train for a guy like Ferguson? It’s highly likely that even ‘El Cucuy’ doesn’t exactly know what he’s going to do when he gets out there. He’s one of the most creative fighters in MMA today.

First Alternate

Very interestingly, Ferguson is also the first alternate for Conor McGregor v Khabib Nurmagamedov, which is the main event of UFC 229 (If you didn’t know that already you’re not an MMA fan.) It might be very interesting to check the odds of him being the lightweight champion after the event.

Khabib has had weight issues in the past but seems to have sorted them now that he has actually gone and started using a nutritionist. Meanwhile, McGregor has had knee problems, but so far appears to be fit to fight. Hopefully, it won’t happen, but ‘El Cucuy’ is ready to step in. You’d fancy him to give anybody a decent fight.
