Charles Oliveira the latest to be hit with fine from the NYSAC…

UFC 210 was something of an off-night for the New York State Athletic Commission. Between Daniel Cormier’s towel-leaning, the blunder of a co-main, and Pearl Gonzales’ breast implant fiasco, the commission found a way to bungle almost everything within their control.

You can now add one more bizarre decision to that list, as Charles Oliveira has been suspended 60 days for leaving the cage immediately following his victory over Will Brooks. The suspension was the same length the NYSAC gave to Yoel Romero for his leaving the cage at UFC 205.

Why Do Some Fighters Get Fined For Leaving The Cage And Others Don’t?

Stipe Miocic, Jose Aldo, and Conor McGregor have all also jumped the cage following a victory. Those three all managed to avoid fines or suspensions for doing so however. How is that? Oliveira and Romero jumped the cage in New York, where the state athletic commission has been undergoing something of a learning curve recently.

It’s unclear why the NYSAC wants to impose their own way of handling such incidents. The suspensions levied are hardly significant however. Oliveira has only fought once on less than two months rest in his UFC career, and Romero never has.

Dana White On The New York State Athletic Commission

Speaking on the recent NYSAC controversies, Dana White had this to say

“Here’s the thing, with the New York State Athletic Commission, it’s like we’re in 2001 again.”

“These guys have to get some experience.”

With New York being the final US state to legalize and regulate MMA, their athletic commission has an uphill climb to catch up with the others. Making matters worse is UFC’s desire to promote big and important fights within the state.

White is confident in the commission’s ability to overcome the learning curve however. While Dana White has never come off as a patient man, he seems to sympathize with the difficulty the commission is experiencing.

“The New York State Athletic Commission has been great. Bad situations happen sometimes, and these guys are still learning.”

“Obviously, these guys are gonna get a lot of small organizations come in, and their refs, their doctors, their commission will all get more work, and will get more comfortable with the sport of mixed martial arts.”
