Conor McGregor has been spotted in an Amsterdam coffee house… but luckily not by USADA

Evidently, Conor McGregor is in Holland. While he might be there to learn from the many great strikers from the country, it’s also possible he’s more interested in checking out some of Amsterdam’s more appealing coffee and marijuana shops.

While Conor didn’t bother to hide his identity in the shop, he did realize later that he may want to hide his activity from USADA. He then attempted to shield his face as he left the shop.

Perhaps Conor was picking up supplies for a possible negotiation session with the Diaz camp over their trilogy bout, but that is only speculation.

That the UFC lightweight champion has been seen purchasing USADA-banned products has led many to ask how long USADA will list marijuana as a banned substance. Many sports are updating their own drug-policies to allow athletes to use marijuana and CBD for reducing inflammation, stress relief, and having good times.

Is Marijuana a Performance-Enhancer?

Some believe marijuana can be a performance-enhancing drug. There are properties in THC and CBD which make it an effective pain-reducing substance and there are those who feel that is enough to have it classified as a PED.

The issue of athletes fighting while high is not new. Nick Diaz’s famous first run-in (that we know about, anyway) with the Nevada State Athletic Commission was as a result of this.

At Pride 33, Nick Diaz defeated Takanori Gomi but the result was later overturned. Diaz’s marijuana metabolite levels, like Diaz himself, were quite high. His levels were more than 3x the allowable amount.

Dr. Tony Alamo of NSAC had this to say at Diaz’s hearing:

“This creates a unique situation. I was there at this fight and believe that you were intoxicated and… that it made you numb to the pain. Did it help you win? I think it did.”

Marijuana continues to be a banned substance at the Olympics as well, which critics say impacts the snowboarding teams more than others.

Only one MMA fighter can claim they actually lost their spot on the UFC roster due to failing tests for marijuana. In 2013, the UFC fired Matt Riddle despite him having won his last 4 bouts with the organization. 2 of the 4 bouts Riddle won were overturned, however, due to failing tests for marijuana. Riddle is now a professional wrestler working on the independent scene.

I’m the only fighter ever fired for marijuana, everyone else gets suspended or a penalty. They just fired me because I was so vocal against testosterone replacement therapy. People knew I used marijuana, and I was always honest about it. Zuffa’s attorney, Michael Mersch, called me and told me not to talk about it. – Matt Riddle

Conor’s Not Here

It appears Conor is hiding from USADA. He tends to hide from Irish gangsters via the same method of disguise.

In all seriousness, there is nothing to say Conor bought or consumed marijuana during his late night coffee shop visit. He might have to put up with a 6AM wakeup from USADA nonetheless, however.
