Light-Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier Has Compared Jon Jones’s Legacy to Lance Armstrong’s…
You get the feeling they’ll be sniping back and forth at each other for the rest of their lives. Daniel Cormier found himself targeted by Jon Jones last week, for daring to think that he will belong in GOAT conversation if he beats heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic next month.
This prompted a very harsh response from Jones, who is the only man to have ever beaten DC, with the second coming by head kick KO. Of course, that fight was overturned after ‘Bones’ tested positive for a banned substance, the third of his career.
Cormier has struck back in vehement style. While Jones exists, there will always be the what-if question about whether or not he could have beaten DC without the use of PEDs. It’s tainted both men’s careers, although Cormier will achieve redemption if he can beat Stipe Miocic at UFC 226.
No Platform
It’s only recently that Cormier has managed to win over the fans. The light-heavyweight champion actually received a lot of empathy after Jones was stripped again. Soon after, DC came back and demolished Volkan Oezdemir, proving that there are levels to this sport. He told CBS Sports about Jones:
“He doesn’t have a platform and I refuse to give him a platform. He’s a nobody. He has been suspended again. He’s mired in controversy for drug abuse. Your issues are tied to steroids, performance enhancers. You don’t get a platform when you’re like that. It’s like me glorifying Lance Armstrong.”
Doping Bans
Even the most ardent Jones fans have to admit that DC makes a good point. Jones has received multiple bans for doping violations. In 2016 he tested positive for clomiphene and letrozole. He was banned for six months, after convincing USADA that they were accidentally consumed. Then after beating DC again, he tested positive for turinabol, and could face a 4-year suspension.
“Jones won the fight but, hey, since USADA has gotten involved with the UFC, he only fought one time,” Cormier said. “He has had four fights scheduled. So he fought Ovince [Saint Preux] and he fought me but that second one was a no contest. The Ovince fight was the only time he fought and there was no controversy surrounding it. So I’m pretty sure there was some dirty stuff going on, that’s why the test results were all jacked up in December.”
Dirty Fighter
In other words, Jones should keep his mouth shut. He’s been fined for cocaine use in the past and stripped of his title three times. The most notorious incident came about when he ran away from a collision with a pregnant woman, while he was under the influence of marijuana.
Maybe DC has a good point then. If you want people to respect your opinion, you have to respect the code of ethics of the organization that you’re fighting under. So far Jones has used those ethics like toilet paper. It’s more to be pitied than laughed at.
