After hearing the report that Usman vs Masvidal 2 is booked to headline UFC 261, there were a lot of different opinions floating whether Masvidal deserves to get a title shot again. Although it is also worth noting that it was Usman that called out Masvidal for the match.
In their first fight, they were not originally booked to fight but because Gilbert Burns pulled out of the fight, Masvidal took the fight on short notice. After hearing news that Masvidal stepped in, the PPV numbers increased tremendously that it became one of the highest PPV buys for the year 2020. Just shows how big of a star Masvidal is right now.
Jorge Masvidal became a huge star after landing the jaw dropping KO against Ben Askren. The KO led to Nate Diaz calling him out which then made the BMF belt. The BMF belt was a one time belt that a lot of celebrities like The Rock and then president Donald Trump were present.
But the question remains, does Masvidal deserve an immediate title shot despite being dominated all five rounds? All credits to Masvidal for taking the fight on short notice but many fans think that he needed to get back in the winning column first before getting into title contention again. He has not shown on whether he improved his game or not.
Some fan on the other side think that Masvidal deserves to fight on a full camp. He basically saved the UFC event plus it was a huge PPV success. Masvidal showed better wrestling than expected but he did not a single round. Masvidal said that it may be due to not being conditioned enough to fight on a five round fight.
Fans can argue but at the end of the day Masvidal will be fighting for the title on UFC 261. What is interesting that Colby Covington is volunteering to be a backup fighter for the welterweight title fight so if either fighter pulls out, we might see Covington in the mix.
Meanwhile, Usman has beaten all of the top guys including Masvidal and Covington but since he is the champion, everyone wants a shot against him. Covington gave him his most difficult fight so a rematch is interesting and if Masvidal vs Covington happens, the fight might have fans get excited due to their history and bad blood.
