2. Edgar and Aldo Each With Something to Prove
This will be the best fight on the show. While neither fighter is happy about fighting for the “interim” featherweight championship, its quite possible that the division’s current champion will not be returning to the weight class. This winner of this fight could easily be named undisputed champion shortly after.
Each fighter has something to prove as well. Frankie Edgar looked as though he was ready to write his name in the record books as one of the greatest UFC champions of all time when he made BJ Penn look silly in 2 straight fights (and later a 3rd), and then when he came away from 2 gritty fights with Gray Maynard as champion it looked like it would be smooth sailing afterwards. Only he then lost his next 3 fights, all of them for a championship. Edgar, ever determined to get back into the championship picture, has won his last 5 straight, including 3 performance of the night bonuses. He wants a belt back badly, and Edgar is a guy that always fights hard.
As for Jose Aldo, he is really at a career impasse. After dominating his division for years it was all taken away in seconds with one Conor McGregor punch. He’s either going to come back with something to prove, or a severely weakened chin and a lack of confidence. We’ll find out which at 200.
