The Mayweather vs. McGregor dialogue continues…
After nearly 18 months of discussion, the fabled Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight draws closer. Although they compete in different aspects of combat sports, the bridges are being crossed by the day.
Held by his UFC contract, in theory, ‘The Notorious’ already has the approval of the UFC to go ahead. Having offered a purse bid that was laughed off, the latest word is that Dana White and co. are looking for 50% of McGregor’s purse.
Gimme The Loot
Bidding aside, McGregor’s chances of defeating Mayweather in a boxing ring have been a hot topic lately. Typically defiant, the Irishman predicted he would KO Mayweather when they fight:
“Watch me take over boxing, trust me on that. No one in this boxing game knows what’s coming, trust me on that. I’m going to step in there and shock the whole god damn world, trust me on that. Look me in the eyes. I’m 28 years of age, confident as a motherf*cker, long, rangy, dangerous with every hand. Trust me, I’m going to stop Floyd [Mayweather] and you’re all going to eat your words. The whole world is going to eat their words.”
Since that night in New York, Mayweather has responded:
Mayweather Responds
“I feel he’s entitled to feel the way he wants to feel, the only thing you can do is respect that,” Mayweather recently told Fight Hype via The Sun.
“I didn’t just become world champion overnight, it was a process, it took me longer than four years, but not as a professional, as professional it took me less than two years to become world champion,” said Mayweather.
“But as an amateur, I had my first amateur fight in 87 and I wasn’t a world champion in the professional ranks until I was 21 I think, 1998.”
“I just want to say, Dana White, I was overseas when they told me what you said (about allowing the fight to happen) I want to say good work Dana White.”
Thoughts
After McGregor essentially showed the middle finger to his employers, the UFC has pretty much fulfilled his predictions, again. Although they are allegedly asking for a large portion of his purse, the promotion has again showed much more leeway for McGregor than they would for anyone else.
