No.6: Demetrious Johnson vs. Ray Borg – 3.15mins of Round 5
At UFC 216 in 2017, long-time UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson produced one of the most audacious submissions in the history of the sport.
Fighting Ray Borg, ‘Mighty Mouse’ was on-course for a comfortable decision victory in the final minutes of the fifth round when he suddenly stepped up another gear and opted to go all out for a finish.
However, the manner in which he went about it stunned everybody watching, including Borg.
Letting out a primal roar, Johnson suddenly grabbed Borg in a body lock, threw him into the air as if going for a suplex, then let go, leapt into the air while grabbing one of his opponent’s arms and then dropped perfectly into place for an armbar, forcing Borg to tap out moments later with only one minute and 45 seconds of the fight remaining.
It was a staggering sequence, the likes of which had never been seen before in the sport, and the move was later given the name, “Mighty Armbar” in his honor, though others have since opted to call it other names such as the “flying armbar” and “The mouse trap” instead.
