No.8: Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos – 3.09mins of Round 5
With a win each, Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos stepped into their trilogy title fight at UFC 166 in 2013 looking to prove once and for all who the better man was.
It didn’t take long though to establish this was going to essentially be a repeat performance of their second fight, in which Velasquez soundly beat JDS over the course of five rounds to emerge with a unanimous decision victory.
On this occasion Velasquez was again pressuring the Brazilian relentlessly with strikes, clinch work and takedowns, while rapidly turning his face into a swollen, bloodied disaster area.
Dana White would later declare that the fight should have been stopped in the third round, but somehow dos Santos kept battling on until the fifth round, where it seemed Velasquez was cruising to a decision victory.
However, this time Velasquez was determined to put an emphatic stamp on his impressive nights work and went all out for the finish, tagging his rival with a big one-two that rocked him before going for a takedown, at which point the out-on-his-feet JDS attempted a counter, but instead fell flat on his face, with the TKO stoppage coming just moments later at 3.09mins of the fifth round.
