3. Shaolin Monk “Pillar of Skill”

Shaolin monks are pretty hardcore. More than skill and technique, these monks focus on mental strength, balance and flexibility in their training. One way to do this is to balance for long periods of time, as this ends up strengthening a monk’s mental focus, it conditions the body, and depending on the position they are balanced in, can also improve flexibility.

Some training methods for the Shaolin monks involve them balancing on a pillar or two pillars with a large spear pointed at their backside. Should the monk lose balance or focus they would get a sharp spike in their nether regions; ample motivation to finish their training session.

While this training method might seem brutal, it is actually downright pleasant compared to another Shaolin monk method discussed later in this article.
