According to Ariel Helwani, UFC is looking to book Poirier vs McGregor 3 for the next fight. Most would agree that Dustin Poirier should fight for the belt for his next fight but should it be McGregor who he just beat?
If we talk about who deserves to fight for the title, McGregor does not deserve to fight for the vacant title. He is coming of a knockout loss against Poirier so if they book an immediate rematch it would backfire against the UFC’s biggest star and also shows disrespect to contenders like Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler who are coming off an impressive wins.
Even though Charles Oliveira is not a popular name for the casuals, he deserves to fight for the title. He just beat Tony Ferguson dominantly and is on an 8-fight win streak. UFC should book someone new to the title contention, Poirier vs Oliveira makes the most sense in terms of who deserves to fight for the title.
Conor McGregor should take time to recover and build up his game even more. He admitted that he was too concentrated in the boxing match that he did not work on the other aspects of the fight. Although his boxing did look sharp against Poirier but his style was different compared to the upcoming McGregor.
Dustin Poirier also said that he is allowing to sit back and watch Oliveira vs Chandler for the vacant belt. He already feels he is the uncrowned champ and has said that he wants to pursue McGregor or Nate Diaz for his next fight.
Obviously fighting either of them makes more money compared to fighting for the belt. Poirier more than deserves to have a massive payday, he has been in the sport for so long and has fought a lot of tough contenders to get to where he is right now.
The UFC has not announced officially yet but if the UFC will book the trilogy of Poirier vs McGregor, it should not be for the belt.
