Henry Cejudo

When UFC star and Olympic wrestling gold medalist Henry Cejudo checked into a hotel in Santa Rosa, California in October of 2017 ahead of a star-studded charity event he had no idea that before long his life would soon be in danger.

At 2am that night, Cejudo awoke to the sound of the hotel’s alarm going off, but after looking out into the hallway everything seemed calm and he went back to sleep.

A few hours later Cejudo came too again and was shocked to discover that his room was filling with smoke and he could see that the hotel lobby was on fire.

What Cejudo didn’t know was that wildfires were ravaging the wine country in Northern California and his hotel was now in its path.

Fearing that he might get trapped if he went down the only staircase, Cejudo decided to jump from the bedroom window, and luckily there was grass below him to give him a softer landing, though he still injured his foot on a burning branch.

By this stage many others who had been in the hotel had already fled, so Cejudo had to make his way on foot up a nearby hill before being rescued by a firemen.

In the panic to escape Cejudo had to leave his 2008 Olympic gold medal behind, but he was just grateful to be alive.
