When Derrick Lewis’ home city of Houston, Texas became badly flooded due to Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the UFC heavyweight star took it upon himself to be a one-man rescue crew for those in need.
“Me and my wife were watching the news and we heard that the officers are not going to be going out,” Lewis told ESPN. “The only way they were going to go out is because of a life-or-death situation. I really didn’t like that, so I went out and tried to help as many people as I can.”
Lewis then braved the terrible conditions in his lifted pick-up truck to go out looking for people who were trapped in the floods.
Photos then began circulating on social media showing Lewis helping family’s out of the water and onto his truck.
Remarkably, Lewis later estimated to ESPN that he had helped to rescue about 100 people.
