Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz

When lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos dropped out of his fight with Conor McGregor at UFC 196, ‘The Notorious’ never flinched as Nate Diaz was drafted in as his opponent on short-notice, even though it meant having to fight at welterweight.

Instead, McGregor was soon mercilessly ripping into his new opponent.

“The only approach I changed is I dug the grave a little bit wider,” McGregor said of his short-notice replacement.   “A little bit longer for Nate’s skinny, fat, long body.”

He also laughed off Diaz’s tough-guy persona.

He’s like a little gangster from the hood. But at the same time he coaches kids’ ju-jitsu on a Sunday morning and goes on bike rides with the elderly. He makes gun signs with the right hand and animal balloons with the left hand. You’re a credit to the community.”

It was all classic McGregor material, but come fight night things didn’t go according to plan.

Despite starting strongly, all McGregor’s pre-fight bravado soon began to fade as Diaz took his best shots and stayed standing. By the second round Diaz was in the driving seat, tagging his rival repeatedly on the feet before seizing on a failed takedown attempt to get the fight to the floor and sink in a fight-ending rear-naked choke submission, handing him his first UFC loss.
