There really are varying degrees of champions in mixed martial arts.  There are champions such as Anderson Silva or Georges St. Pierre who for years were the dominant fighter in their weight division.  These fighters go on to earn legendary status and the right to continue fighting well into their 50s on shows booked by Scott Coker.

Then there are the champions who find a way to win the belt, but then completely falter afterwards.  In no other division is this more prevalent than in the women’s bantamweight division, where twice now champions have followed up the biggest win of their life with poor performances.  For some fighters they spent so long trying to get the title that once they have it they lose that drive and determination that got them to the top to begin with. Perhaps that is what we saw in the last fights of both Holly Holm and Miesha Tate.

How this list was calculated is that we looked at all the champions in UFC history and looked at each fighters win/loss record following their initial title win.  Fighters who successfully defended the title have been omitted from this list.  Ranking was determined based on win/loss record and public perception following losing the title.

Miesha Tate was excluded from this list seeing as she hasn’t fought since losing the title, so its a little early to determine how the rest of her career will go.

Here’s five fighters whose careers died after winning the title…
