The McGregor effect
This is no bandwagon opinion, but the words of Conor McGregor at the UFC 202 press conference during fight week have struck a chord. With UFC 200 tanking hard in terms of entertainment, ‘The Notorious’ comes in to the argument in a big way.
The Irish star famously claimed he was ‘bigger than the UFC’ and when he missed a press conference for UFC 200, a battle of stubborn forces erupted. The UFC, in a show of dominance in business tactics, struck McGregor from the card.
That in turn led to Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier headlining the event, and also to Jones being removed from the event during fight week. The UFC cut their nose off to spite their face, and it may have backfired in a big way here.
