4. Justin Wren and Josh Burns Bellator 141
Justin “Big Pygmy” Wren, has dedicated a large portion of his life to helping populations of pygmy people living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He took several years off of MMA competition in order to travel to the Congo and help with the digging of wells in order to supply nearby populations with clean water. He has mentioned that he contracted malaria at one point doing this work.
He documented his work on Joe Rogan’s podcast just before returning to compete at Bellator 141. It turns out having had malaria is a bit of a hinderance to working on your cardio. Both of these guys were exhausted almost instantly in this fight. By the end of the first round their “clinches” along the cage had become opportunities for each of them to rest on one another’s shoulder. By the middle of the second round they were organizing breaks and timeouts in the centre of the cage. Each fighter could safely rest, knowing that the other one was too tired to attack.
