3. Mark Coleman vs Pete Williams

Mark Coleman is sometimes referred to as “the Godfather of Ground and Pound”, as he was the first wrestler to use his abilities to bring an opponent to the mat and lay into them.

In many ways Coleman was a true pioneer for wrestlers in MMA, becoming the first UFC Heavyweight Champion after he united the title with the SuperFight belt by beating Dan Severn at UFC 12. But then Coleman began to pioneer another aspect of MMA: fighters gassing out.

After losing his championship to Maurice Smith at UFC 12, Coleman made it all too clear to his potential opponents what their strategy should be: survive the initial onslaught then take advantage of a very tired Mark Coleman. Coleman had so much muscle on his frame in this fight at UFC 17, that he was gassed out almost immediately after expending the slightest bit of energy. The result was he couldn’t keep his hands up and Pete Williams kicked him square in the face to end the fight.
