Frank Mir
Despite being a former UFC heavyweight champion and one of the most recognisable stars on the roster, Frank Mir continued to maintain a job as director of security at the Spearmint Rhino strip club in Las Vegas for many years, while still competing in the Octagon.
Mir held the role before he joined the UFC in 2001, and in fact he was actually on his motorcycle on his way to work at the strip club in 2004 when he was struck by a car and sent flying through the air for 90ft, leaving him with a broken femur and every ligament in his knee torn, in addition to other injuries.
The damage was potentially career-threatening and saw Mir having to relinquish his UFC heavyweight title as he battled back to full fitness with the help of his wife Heather, who coincidentally was a former employee at the Spearmint Rhino too.
Thankfully, Mir was able to resume his career in the Octagon, but kept his security job for several more years, until finally calling it a day after his first blockbuster fight with Brock Lesnar due to the unwanted level of attention that drew.
“Too many people after the Brock fight were like, ‘Oh, (expletive), it’s Frank Mir,” the fighter said. “I just didn’t want to be in an altercation where something would happen and then I’d have a lawsuit on me or someone take a cheap shot at me.”
