If you can believe it, Randy Couture was actually awarded his black belt in jiu-jitsu during the post-fight interview of this fight. If choking out a pro-boxer with no prior MMA experience is all it takes to get a BJJ black belt, one has to wonder how it took Couture as long as it did to earn one.
James Toney, whose current boxing record is 76W-10L, had been telling anyone who would listen that he could beat up any UFC fighter in an MMA bout, so Dana White gave him the opportunity to do just that. White scheduled Toney to face Couture at UFC 118.
Couture wasted no time taking Toney down, then submitted him in a little over 3 minutes. Toney was promptly released from the multi-fight deal he had signed with the UFC afterwards.
