8. Chad Mendes vs. Cody McKenzie
When Cody McKenzie joined the cast of the Ultimate Fighter season 12, he had an 11W-0L record. Not only that but he had won his last 9 fights via the same submission hold: the “Kenzie-tine” (aka a guillotine choke done by Cody McKenzie).
You always worry about a fighter who relies so much on one hold, figuring that once opponents figure out how to avoid or counter the move, they will be left with few options left. Yet McKenzie made it all the way to the UFC with the strength of that one submission hold.
He won 2 of his first 4 fights in the UFC, both via the Kenzie-tine, but after that things went down hill fast for Cody. In his 5th fight for the promotion Chad “Money” Mendes delivered a body blow so severe in the opening moments of the fight that it immediately let everyone know the Kenzie-tine would not be making an appearance that night.
McKenzie was cut by the UFC to close out 2013, and has racked up a lowly 2W-5L record on smaller shows ever since.
