#4 Matt Wiman vs Mac Danzig

Submissions are a little different from knockouts, in terms of when a referee should intervene. For one, knockouts are pretty obvious. One guy gets blasted a few times and it’s alright to stop the fight. But submissions are a little trickier because of the technical aspect of things.

Case in point: Matt Wiman vs Mac Danzig at UFC 115.

The referee in question this time? Yves Lavigne. With two minutes to go in the very first round, Wiman caught Danzig in a Guillotine Choke and Lavigne stopped the bout. Danzig never tapped, nor was he put to sleep. He was actually defending himself intelligently. He did what he needed to do to survive.

Too bad Lavigne didn’t see things that way.
