#3 Anthony Johnson vs Kevin Burns
“Rumble” has but five losses on his professional record. Only one of those losses came by knockout. But was it the right call? We continue our referee shaming with Steve Mazzagatti.
When Johnson met Burns at UFC Fight Night 14, he ended up getting stopped. Or did he?
Turns out, the lone stoppage loss on Johnson’s record shouldn’t have been recorded as Burns should have gotten a disqualification instead. Burns received four warnings by Mazzagatti about eye pokes but was never deducted a point.
In the third round, Johnson got poked in the eye again and immediately went down but instead of ruling the DQ, Mazzagatti inexplicably ruled a TKO in favor of Burns.
Johnson protested the call, but was unsuccessful. Returning the favor, Johnson rematched Burns immediately and knocked him out cold.
