#2 Jon Jones vs Matt Hamill

Boy, Steve Mazzagatti sure has it tough. To be fair though, this was as tough a call as they come.

Before we jump into things, yes, this was Jon Jones’ only loss and it came by disqualification. He used 12-6 elbows which is illegal in the UFC. And he deserves this DQ because it was an illegal move and he was correctly penalized for using it. But was it the right ruling given the situation?

Let’s take a look. When Jones landed the illegal elbow, he was subsequently deducted a point as Mazzagatti asked his opponent if he was able to continue. Hamill ended up not continuing the fight, hence the DQ.

However, Hamil not being able to continue wasn’t due to the damage of the 12-6 elbow. It was because he had dislocated his shoulder after getting tossed around by Jones in the sequence prior.

If Hamill wasn’t able to continue because of his shoulder, and not because of the illegal elbows, then it shouldn’t have been a DQ. It should have been a TKO for Jones.
