Diego Sanchez’s Self-Awareness Coach

Diego Sanchez raised eyebrows earlier this year when he left the famous Jackson’s camp and decided to dispense with having traditional cornermen for his next fight with Michael Chiesa at UFC 239.

Instead, Sanchez chose to have only one person in his corner – a ‘self-awareness coach’ named Josh Fabia, who had no prior MMA knowledge or experience to offer him.

Needless to say this seemed like a terrible idea to everybody except Sanchez.

“This is like a circus clown giving Dave Chapelle comedy technique,” UFC color commentator Joe Rogan quipped.

In the first round of the fight Chiesa clearly got the better of Sanchez, so it was time for Fabia to earn his keep, but it was practically half-way through the minute break before he even found his way into the Octagon with the stool.

“I need that Tyson…I need that…strikes. Let the strikes happen,” was all Fabia could muster before it was time to get back out of the cage.

Fabia’s advice following another dominant round for Chiesa wasn’t any better.

“It’s time!” Fabia told Sanchez. “No more playing around. You got to go 100…

“…That’s it!”

Chiesa would go on to win a clean shutout on the scorecards (30-26) from all three judges.
