UFC 5’s Superfight Failure

After their troubles at UFC 4, the promotion looked to rebound strongly by delivering not only a one-night tournament at UFC 5, but also delivering their first ever superfight title bout between Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock.

260,000 UFC fans on PPV were then treated to what, to this day, remains one of the worst fights ever seen in the Octagon, as Shamrock got on top of Gracie and proceeded to do a grand total of nothing for what seemed like an eternity.

At the time the rules didn’t allow for the referee to intervene to stand the fighters up, and with no judges set to rule on the fight, the action, or lack-thereof, dragged on for no less than 36 minutes before officials finally intervened to declare the bout a draw.
