Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir
WWE superstar Brock Lesnar’s wasn;t handed an easy fight for his debut at UFC 81 in 2008, going up against former heavyweight champion Frank Mir.
Lesnar almost instantly got Mir to the mat and started hammering away with big ground and pound blows that threatened to end the fight as quickly as it began.
However, then referee Steve Mazzagatti stopped the fight, claiming Lesnar had been illegally hitting to the back of the head and as a result deducted a point, gave Mir time to regain his bearings and restarted the fight on the feet.
Lesnar had certainly not appeared to be deliberately or excessively targeting te back of Mir’s head, but nevertheless on the restart he dropped Mir and resumed his ground and pound assault, only to then be caught in a kneebar submission that forced him to tap out just 90 seconds into the fight.
“This f**king guy shouldn’t even be watching MMA on TV, let alone refereeing it,” Dana White ranted on the Opie & Anthony show some time later. “I think he’s the worst ref in the history of any fight business, ever.”
