In 2011 a nightmare scenario unfolded for the people of Japan as the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in the region took place out at sea and sent an enormous tsunami sweeping towards the Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.
The wall of water, which was estimated to have reached as high as 40m and was travelling at up to 435mph, would claim over 15,000 lives, destroyed over 120,000 buildings and would cost an estimated $235 billion, making it the most expensive natural disaster in history.
As if that wasn’t enough, it also caused level 7 meltdowns at three nuclear reactors at a power plant, which led to hundreds of thousands of people nearby being evacuated and the whole world watching on in fear of what could happen if the accident wasn’t brought under control.
Former PRIDE, UFC and Shooto star Enson Inoue wasn’t in that region on the fateful day the earthquake struck, but he would become a major activist there in the days, months and even years afterwards, making dozens of trips to bring tens of thousands of dollars worth of food, water and essential supplies to those in need, and even helping the stray animals that had been left abandoned when the most radioactive areas were made no-go-zones.
