Josh Thomson vs. Yves Edwards

Josh Thomson was undefeated in his eight-fight career when he went up against the far more experienced Yves Edwards at UFC 49 in 2004.

Despite the experience gap it was Thomson who took control of the fight for the first four minutes of the round.

However, then Edwards managed to take Thomson’s back while they were standing. In an attempt to break free Thomson moved forwards while trying to peel his opponent’s hands off of him.

There was only 30 seconds of the round remaining, so Thomson could have opted to just defend and play it safe.

Instead he opted for a more spectacular approach, suddenly executing a spinning backfist in the hopes of catching Edwards unawares as he broke free.

Unfortunately for him, as he did so ‘The Thugjitsu Master’ did something even more unexpected, jumping up and landing a huge kick to Thomson’s exposed head that knocked him out.

“I was basically just a kid out there and showing off and it cost me the fight,” Thomson reflected with regret of his first ever loss to mmamania.com many years later.
