4. Brandon Vera
At one point people were wondering if Brandon Vera could win titles in two different weight classes, now people don’t think of Brandon Vera unless they are reading articles like this one.
Actually Vera is currently a champion, he is the inaugural ONE Heavyweight Champion in the Philippines. Vera is 38 now, and after getting cut from the UFC in 2014, it is unlikely he’ll ever return, and if he does he won’t have enough time to really reach the potential many used to feel he had.
Vera impressed a lot of people when he defeated former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir in 2006, but consecutive losses to Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum kind of put a damper on Vera’s chances of winning the heavyweight title.
He dropped to light heavyweight and was doing ok (aside from a loss to Keith Jardine) until the judges robbed him of a victory over Randy Couture at UFC 105. Still Vera’s future looked bright after the Couture fight, but that all ended when Jon Jones knocked him out in the 1st round of his next fight.
The Jones fight proved that Vera couldn’t hang with the elite at either light heavyweight or heavyweight. He was eventually released after losing to Ben Rothwell at UFC 164.
