So it’s final. Conor McGregor will take on Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight belt at UFC 205 in New York — the organization’s first event in the Big Apple and the first event from a mixed martial arts organization after the sport had been sanctioned following years of trying.
McGregor’s meteoric rise through the ranks was derailed all of a sudden with a loss to Nate Diaz earlier this year, but he bounced back with a victory in an immediate rematch and the trash talk has continued.
Make no mistake about it. McGregor should NOT be fighting Alvarez at all. If fate would have it, McGregor would be defending his UFC featherweight belt against Jose Aldo because, well, that’s what is supposed to happen.
McGregor is in the driver’s seat and we are merely passengers in his slingshot to fame. Any McGregor fight is an event however, and whether you love him or you hate him, one thing’s for sure — you’ll be watching.
But, here we are to set things straight. Let Scrap Digest regale you with Five Reasons Conor McGregor Should NOT Be Fighting Eddie Alvarez.
#5 He NEEDS to Defend the Featherweight Belt
Let’s not forget Conor McGregor has held the UFC featherweight belt hostage for almost a year now. Since his 13-second destruction of former champion and then pound-for-pound king Jose Aldo, McGregor has left the featherweight division in his rear view mirror and hasn’t looked back since.
The fact that he still holds the belt to this day and that Aldo is now merely an interim champion after battling number one contender Frankie Edgar and winning, is a paradox of logic. There’s just no explanation for it other than the fact that McGregor is king and ruler of MMA, and we are all just peasants.
Suffice to say, McGregor needs to either defend that featherweight strap, or vacate it. He should NOT be fighting Eddie Alvarez.
