Jonathan Ivey Fakes Heart Attack And Taps Out
On paper, Travis Fulton vs. Jonathan Ivey at Colosseum Combat 45 on June 30th always looked like being a weird one.
After all, it was the 308th fight of Fulton’s 254-54 career, while Ivey held a 32-56 career and had claimed pre-fight that his opponent was his hero – and had a 10-year-old tattoo of Fulton’s face on his upper thigh to prove it.
During the first round, Fulton landed a kick to the portly body of his opponent, at which point Ivey clutched at his chest in pain, leading to many observers to fear he was having a heart attack, only to then continue fighting as if nothing had happened.
Things got stranger still when Ivey then floored Fulton with a left hook and began landing ground and pound in pursuit of a finish.
However, with Fulton on the verge of being stopped, Ivey suddenly backed away and tapped out, leading to Fulton winning by TKO due to retirement.
It was a truly bizarre moment, which Ivey later explained was due to not wanting to dish out any more punishment to his fallen idol.
“Obviously I always want to win, but it’s not worth that if it means I have to keep hitting my hero that way,” Ivey told MMAJunkie.
