Cody Gibson
Following a loss to Manny Gamburyan in the UFC back in 2014, bantamweight fighter Cody Gibson spent a few days relaxing in Las Vegas and on the night before he was due to return home ended up at a bar on the strip.
While there, Gibson claims another patron started looking for trouble and the two got into a verbal confrontation, leading to him being shoved.
At that stage Gibson began taunting the bigger man, warning him that he was a UFC fighter. Apparently the other man didn’t believe him, so Gibson told him to, “Google me, bitch!”
Gibson then made the mistake of looking off to the side to see what someone else was saying, at which point the aggressor sucker-punched him hard in the face.
Gibson’s fighter instincts then kicked in and he executed a double-leg takedown, but after a scramble they were soon back on their feet and Gibson was in the middle of another takedown when others moved in to break the fight up.
“I’m glad everything went down the way it did,” Gibson said later. “I didn’t throw any punches, I just kind of defended myself. The video kind of makes me look like I was instigating it more than it probably was. I didn’t start instigating anything until he pushed me. By that time, I was pretty much down to scrap at that point. I’m embarrassed by the whole thing. I wish I would have responded better and just got out of there.”
