UFC fight Night 97
Having BJ Penn headlining a card gainst Ricardo Lamas seemed a somewhat questionable decision in itself back in 2016 given that ‘The Prodigy’ was well past his sell-by date at that stage.
Penn had only won once in his last seven fights, had apparently been in retirement for much of the previous two years and upon his return had picked up a suspension for the illegal use of an IV.
The gamble to headline with him backfired when Penn pulled out of the fight only a week-and-a-half removed from fight night due to an injury.
Two days later the UFC announced that the entire fight card had been cancelled, with all the fighters still being given their show money.
