Mike Winkeljohn is one of MMA’s premier striking coaches as well as being a former kickboxer, but despite his toughness inside the ring, it would be a session on the mitts that would result in the worst injury of his career.
While holding pads for a student, a stray kick led to a toenail slicing his eye in two.
At first Winkeljohn didn’t realize how bad it was, asking the student if it was a cut that was bleeding onto his cheek, only to then discover that the fluid he was feeling was from his eye.
Winkeljohn’s eye shrivelled up and had to be removed, but that hasn’t stopped the tough-as-nails former fighter from continuing to be a world-famous striking coach to some of MMA’s biggest stars.
