Eddie Alvarez vs. Gilbert Melendez
In the first round of his fight with Gilbert Melendez at UFC 188 in 2015, Eddie Alvarez was caught by an elbow strike that broke his nose.
Inbetween rounds Alvarez then made the mistake of blowing his nose and his eye quickly swelled shut.
The fight could easily have been stopped there, but it was allowed to continue, even although by his own admission, Alvarez says he couldn’t see out of that eye for the remainder of the fight.
Alvarez admits to “getting a little nervous” for his own safety, but he says it made him fight like his life depended on it, and it worked, as despite having also broken his orbital bone he still managed to emerge with a split decision victory.
