The Mir Lock
Frank Mir is widely recognised as one of the very best submission specialists in UFC heavyweight history, and he was already proving it early in his UFC career when he fought Pete Williams in only his second ever trip to the Octagon.
Although Mir is widely credited with inventing the move, which is often registered as having been an ‘Inside Shoulder Lock’ or ‘Mir Lock,’ the fighter himself says he became aware of it via Small Circle Jiu-Jitsu creator Wally Jay, although his was a standing variant, while Mir adapted it for the mat.
While Williams was on top of Mir in the opening minute of the fight, the future heavyweight champion caught him completely unawares when he locked up the unique shoulder lock from his back and forced him to tap out.
