Elbows From The Back Crucifix

Way back in 1996, Gary Goodridge managed to simultaneously register what would prove to be one of the most unusual and also most devastating knockouts in the history of the sport.

In the days leading up to his fight with Paul Herrera at UFC 8, Goodridge’s team had a chance to see Herrera continually practicing a fireman’s carry takedown and so they drilled with their fighter a way to counter it with a submission move that would target his wrist.

Sure enough, in the fight Herrera did try for the takedown and as planned Goodridge countered by setting him up in a crucifix position from his back with his legs trapping one of his opponent’s arms, while holding the other with one of his own arms.

The gameplan had been for Goodridge to then apply the wrist submission, but in the heat of the moment ‘Big Daddy’ instead began hammering the now-defenseless Herrera with huge elbows to the side of his head and temple.

The force of the blows quickly rendered Herrera unconscious, though he absorbed several more elbows afterwards before the ref stepped in to end the barbaric beating.
