The Upwards Elbow

Yair Rodriguez’s finish against ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung in the main event of UFC Fight Night 139 was not only one of the rarest in the entire history of the sport, but also one of the most dramatic and spectacular.

The fight had already been an all-out striking war for virtually the entirety of it’s five rounds, and in the dying seconds both fighters seemed ready to launch into one last bid for glory in an attempt to finish the fight before the final bell.

It was Jung who made the move first, lurching forward on the offensive, only for Rodriguez to duck underneath and then launch an upwards elbow, which shot towards the sky and connected directly to his opponents chin, instantly KO’ing The Zombie while sending him falling face-first onto the canvas.

This was all the more incredible given that it had occurred in the final second of the fight on an evening when the UFC were celebrating their 25th anniversary.
